Properties of metals data

November 11, 2009

We’ve had a few enquiries on Level 3 from first year Mech Eng students looking for data on the properties of metals.

A really useful resource for finding this kind of  information is Smithells Metals Reference Book.  It’s  available in print at 669(02) SMI on Level 3, and also as an electronic book which you can access from your PC either on or off campus.   For example, Section 22 covers Mechanical Properties of Metals and Alloys.

Do let us know if you need any help using the hard copy or ebook!

BUCS Maintenance weekend 13-14th December

November 27, 2008

Please be aware that on the weekend of the 13th and 14th December, BUCS have scheduled network maintenance that will impact upon your use of university PCs and library services.

For all intents and purposes, there will be no access to the web using campus PCs over this weekend,. PCs based in the library will be offline as well as those located in various labs and e-lounges. There will be no access to any departmental webpages, no links to library services and online resources from on or off campus and Moodle will also be unavailable.

Copying and Printing services in the library will also be affected and will not be available.

New book loans can be issued manually during staffed hours, but the self-issue machines will be offline and there will be no provision for any loan renewals and you will not be able to place any reservations/holds over this weekend.

Most of you will probably have finished course assignments before this weekend, but if you do for any reason have a submission date early in the week beginning 15th December, PLEASE plan ahead to make sure you have obtained all the materials you need and printed out any work before the 13th of December.

Library Information Sessions in Semester 2

January 28, 2008

You may be starting project work this semester.  If you are a bit concerned about how to go about doing a literature review, finding the information and data relevant to your topic or even just wondering how to write up your references at the end, the library is repeating its popular series of information sessions this year.

In co-operation with SORTED in the Student Union, library staff will be presenting a series of topics in the next few weeks:

“To Google or not to Google” is about making better use of search engines, evaluating online information and will introduce some of the library’s resources that you may not have used before.

“How to avoid Plagiarism” is suited to undergraduates looking for a better understanding of what Plagiarism is, why it’s bad and how to avoid it!

“Referencing – A beginner’s guide” gives advice and examples related to correctly referencing the sources you’re going to use in your project work.

All combined, these sessions could help make the entire literature review/project writing process a lot less daunting.

Check the Library Research and Information skills page for more information about the sessions running this semester.

You can book a place or get more information through SORTED in the Student Union.

Web of Knowledge Interface upgrade – 3rd February

January 22, 2008

UPDATE: The date of the upgrade has been altered to Sunday February 3rd

From early 2008, the traditional Web of Knowledge user interface you might be used to will be replaced by an upgraded version with a number of new features. This new interface is currently available from the Web of Knowledge site to provide you with time to familiarise yourself with the new layout and functionality of the WoK service – look for the “Access New Version” button at the top of the screen to try it out.

One of the most important new features is the All Databases search, which replaces CrossSearch.

The All Databases search allows you to:

  • Search across all ISI Web of Knowledge databases your institution subscribes to
  • Retrieve up to 100,000 results, automatically sorted by the journal cover publication date
  • Easily refine and analyze your search results

Help on using the new interface is available online via the Web of Knowledge website. There are also quick reference cards available for download in PDF format, some hardcopies are also available from your Subject Librarian:

Please contact your Subject Librarian for advice or if you have an queries about using the upgraded service.

With the scheduled upgrade, dual access to ISI Web of Knowledge will be discontinued, and all users and institutions will access the new version.

Are you working this vacation..?

December 17, 2007

With upcoming exams to revise for and maybe some project work to plan in early 2008, some of you will have stuffed your luggage full of library books with great intentions to study at home during the vacation!

However, don’t forget that the university library can provide access to a lot of content online that you might find useful while you are away from the uni too.

So long as you use the links from the library webpages you can access electronic resources, (such as databases and e-journals for finding useful research articles as well as e-books) from off-campus with only your BUCS username and password required to login. If you aren’t sure how to use these things, have a browse around the library website for our guides pages.  Hopefully, we have put enough information online to get you started if you haven’t used these resources before.

Enjoy the vacation!

New Library Service Launched: ELIN@Bath

October 1, 2007

The Library is pleased to announce the launch of ELIN@Bath: Electronic Library Information Navigator.

In ELIN users can search the Library’s online collection of e-journals, articles, databases and e-books from multiple sources using one single user-friendly interface.

Maybe you’ve come across what seems to be the perfect article in a Google search, only to find you cannot access the fulltext of the article. One of the main benefits of using ELIN is that users can choose to search only for articles available in full text, in journals to which the Library subscribes and in open access journals and archives. Users can then follow a link straight to the full text of an article.

You can personalise the ELIN service using the options in My Collection:

  • save your search queries and results
  • get email alerts when new articles and journal issues are published
  • add links to your most used ebooks and ejournal resources to your collection

The service is provided by Lund University Libraries in Sweden, where it has been in development since 2001. Lund is also the home of the Directory of Open Access Journals and Journal Info service. ELIN@Bath will be trialled alongside the Library’s existing web pages and catalogue for one year starting September 2007.
