Are you starting your Final Year Mechanical Engineering Project, or undertaking your 3rd year Group Business & Design Project? If so, why not check out the webpages we’ve put together to support you in your research? These pages explain resources and publications you may not have used in your course up until now, and should be of help if you’re not quite sure where to look for information beyond Wikipedia and Google. There are notes relating to journals and conference papers, an introduction to some of the databases the library subscribes to, and some (hopefully) helpful tips to make your searches more effective and refine results to get the articles most relevant to you.
You can access these Project Pages here, or just follow the link toward the bottom of the Mechanical Engineering ‘Resources for Subject’ Library webpage.
While the focus of these pages is on Mechanical Engineering resources, the search strategies and introductory notes are relevant to any Engineering and Design department.
Best of luck with your research projects and do tell me if there is anything else you think I should add to these pages!

We’ve had a few enquiries on Level 3 from first year Mech Eng students looking for data on the properties of metals.
A really useful resource for finding this kind of information is Smithells Metals Reference Book. It’s available in print at 669(02) SMI on Level 3, and also as an electronic book which you can access from your PC either on or off campus. For example, Section 22 covers Mechanical Properties of Metals and Alloys.
Do let us know if you need any help using the hard copy or ebook!

It can be easy to forget when your books are due back, so why not sign up to the Library’s ‘loan reminder’ service? It’s simple to set up, and means you’ll get a reminder email before you start incurring overdue fines! All you need to do is log into ‘Your use of the Library’ via the Library Catalogue, and select the ‘loan reminders’ option.
Following requests via the talkback board and SSLCs, there are now options to receive loan reminders three days or seven days before the due date, in addition to those sent one day before which already existed. Log into “Your use of the Library” to change your preference.
